Air moved through the old man's lips
with barely a whistle.

It moved in time to the sweet grainy sounds that filled the space around him, transporting him back to nights spent in smoky rooms and underground clubs. Silent men with steady gazes sat and listened, their eyes framed by the edges of grey felt hats, the cigars between their fingers tinting the room blue.

He remembered the musicians filled the stage, bass, drums and sweet guitar. Those men dressed in sharp suits, playing for the slightest nod of respect, playing just to play. Their music filled the old mans ears now just as it had back then. He slowly lifted himself from his chair, shuffled across the room and reached for the record that spun on top of his old gramophone.

He flipped the record over and held it, feeling it heavy in his hands.
He felt so lucky to have had this music in his life, being able share it with his friends and the people that he knew. With this thought in mind he began to crank the handle, deciding then and there that the best way to reward himself was to gently lower the record and place it down carefully.
